The best golfers in the world will make their way to Kiawah Island to play the Ocean Course for the 2021 PGA Championship. In 2012, Rory McIlroy ran away with it when he shot -12. Most people don’t know this but David Lynn came in second at -5. Many argue the winds were not a major factor during that week at Kiawah but 2021 could be very different. So, how fast are the winds blowing at Kiawah Island when the golf course plays like a true major?

Once sustained winds are above 30-35 mph most golf tournaments are suspended due to the fact that the golf balls will not remain stable on the greens. The greens at The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island are very exposed as there is nothing but ocean for a number of the greens. It is often the case the the wind is blowing into your face on holes 6-9 on the front nine and 10-13 on the back nine. So, eight straight holes of the wind whipping into your face. Players get a reprieve when they turn around at 14 and head into the final stretch of holes.

This year, some have predicted that the wind will be the opposite direction meaning holes 1-4 and 14-18 will be into the wind. While this will be much more fun for the viewer, it could drive the tour pros crazy.

On Wednesday night the forecast is for winds to be around 15-20 mph for Thursday and Friday. There could be gusts up to 25-30 mph which will mean the best in the world will need to be on top of their games. It doesn’t look as if the winds will be high enough to suspend play but we could see some frustration out of any golf that hits the ball high and cannot control their trajectory into the wind.
